What is buyback?

A buyback, also known as a share buyback, is when a company repurchases its own outstanding shares in the open market. This can be done for a variety of reasons, including to increase the value of the remaining shares by reducing the supply, to offset the dilution of stock caused by the issuance of new shares, or to return excess cash to shareholders. Companies can use their own cash or take out loans to finance buybacks.
